As a journalism student, watching the nightly news and setting CNN as my homepage has become second nature. Lately I couldn’t help but notice an increasingly common story that has been appearing more and more frequently in the past month - people ignoring those in need. Just today as I gazed the CNN homepage I noticed an alarming story lead in bold writing: Woman Dies Ignored on Hospital Waiting Room Floor. Esmin Green, 49, waited in the emergency room for 24 hours on June 19 before she fell off of her chair and landed face down on the floor. She laid on the floor for over an hour before an emergency medical staff member got to her and pronounced she was dead:
A similar instance happened just two weeks before when an elderly man was hit by a car while several witnesses stood there and did not assist him:
Since when did Americans stop wanting to help each other? Can’t we pick up the phone and dial 9-1-1? Whatever happen to “do onto others as you would want them to do to you?”
